Law Firm Technology

As anyone who knows me will say, I love playing with new technology. I’ve always had a fascination with computing specifically, and higher tech in general. So of course, launching a new firm is a great time to play with new tech.

All my personal gear is Apple product, so it made sense to run my firm on Macs. I know many people can’t stand the walled garden of the Apple world, but I for one find that it’s a very pretty garden, and very well-designed. Unfortunately, many software developers in the legal world don’t share my view.

For the most part, things will run just fine on Macs, and my new Macbook Pro is handling things just fine. There are however, a few software packages that simply are not now, and may never be compatible with Mac OS X. There are even a few tools “in the cloud” that absolutely require Internet Explorer. It’s shocking to come across this in 2014, when pretty much everything online is compatible with most browsers, and even IE has had to smarten up about compliance with standards.

But, it is what it is, and therefore, I have to run Windows on VMWare to access the very few, but very key pieces of software that won’t run natively on my mac. Frustrating.
